The Gantt chart allows you to view and manage task dependencies. A task dependency allows you to indicate that a task depends on another task to be completed before work can begun and completed. Dependencies can be between tasks in the same or different projects.
Dependencies can be added on the Dependencies tab of the Task Details page or through the Gantt chart. The Gantt allows you to more easily see dependencies as you edit them. It is more difficult, though, to add dependencies between tasks in different projects on the Gantt.
View Dependencies
Dependencies on the Gantt are shown with an arrow going from a task to the tasks that are dependent on it. In addition, any task with dependencies with have a lock icon in its row on the left of the chart, with a number denoting the number of dependencies. The number will reflect both tasks that it is dependent on as well as tasks that are dependent on it (upstream and downstream dependencies).
Add a Dependency
You can only add downstream dependencies on the Gantt. You select a task and link it to a task which is dependent on it. You cannot go the other way, linking a task to a task on which it depends (upstream).
To add a dependency:
- Hover over the task. A bubble displays at each end of the task's block.
- Click a bubble and drag to the task which depends on the first task. Which bubble you click and drag to will determine if the dependency is based on start or end dates. You can link start to end dates and the other way around.
- Use the bubble on the left to link the start date.
- Use the bubble on the right to link the end date.
- As you drag, a dotted blue line displays to help you visualize the link between the two tasks.
- When you are over the task, release your mouse. A pop-up displays confirming the dependency.
- Click Confirm. The dependency is created.
Delete a Dependency
Dependencies can be deleted on the Gantt.
To delete a dependency:
- Double-click the dependency line. A confirmation modal displays.
- Click Delete.
